EU grant success probability: what actually moves it

Success probability is not a mystery — it is a weighted sum of things you can measure before submitting. Fit with the call dominates; consortium composition and proposal maturity do most of the remaining work.

Score your proposal now

Success Score computes your competitiveness across the weighted factors below, flags the weakest ones, and simulates how consortium changes move the number.

The factor weights

Grantibase's competitiveness model weighs the drivers like this — profile match with the call fixed at 40%, and the remaining 60% split across consortium and proposal dimensions:

  • Profile match — 40%. How much of the call's scope and expected outcomes your project genuinely covers.
  • Consortium strength — 15%. Track record, coordinator experience, and complementarity of the partners.
  • Industrial coverage — 10%. Whether exploitation-relevant industry partners are actually in the consortium, not just in the impact section.
  • Geography — 9% and proposal maturity — 9%. Country balance (including widening participation) and how developed the work plan and budget are.
  • Eligibility margin — 7%, innovation level — 5%, expected impact — 5%. Smaller levers — real, but they will not rescue a poor match.

Example

Two consortia target the same Horizon Europe topic. Consortium A matches 85% of the scope but has no industrial partner and weak eastern-European coverage. Consortium B matches 60% with a flawless partner map. The weights say A still leads — 40% of the signal is match — but A's fastest gain is adding one industrial partner from a widening country: two weighted gaps closed with a single addition.

Where GRANTIBASE helps

Success Score computes these factors for your saved proposal and consortium, shows the per-factor breakdown, and simulates edits — add a partner, change a country — so you see the score move before the evaluators do. Pair it with Partner Finder to fill the exact gaps the score exposes.

Success probability FAQ

Can EU grant success be predicted?
Not as a guarantee — evaluation panels retain judgment. But competitiveness is largely explained by measurable factors: how closely the project matches the call scope, consortium strength and coverage, geographic balance, and how mature the proposal is at submission. Scoring those factors reliably separates long shots from serious contenders.
What is the single biggest driver of success probability?
Fit with the call scope. In Grantibase's competitiveness model, profile match carries roughly 40% of the total weight — more than twice any other factor. A perfectly built consortium cannot rescue a project that answers a different question than the call asks.
How do I improve a low success score fastest?
Fix the heaviest weighted gaps first: sharpen the match with the call's expected outcomes, then strengthen the consortium where coverage is thin (industrial partners and underrepresented geographies typically move the score most per unit of effort).
