The six checks

  1. Eligibility. Country, entity type, consortium minimums, and any TRL window. One failed gate ends the assessment.
  2. Budget fit. Compare the indicative per-project budget to your real cost estimate. A €2m project squeezed into a €800k envelope reads as unrealistic; the reverse reads as padding.
  3. Deadline feasibility. Count backwards: partner commitments, letters, budget tables, and internal sign-off all precede the writing you are picturing.
  4. Evaluation criteria. Read how points are awarded — excellence, impact, implementation — and where thresholds sit. Your weakest criterion decides the outcome more than your strongest.
  5. Difficulty and competition. Oversubscribed flagship topics behave differently from niche two-stage calls. Factor expected proposal volume into the decision, not just fit.
  6. Watchouts. Scan the conditions for mandatory partners, co-funding, IP clauses, and annex-level requirements that change the deal.

Example

A cleantech SME assesses a LIFE call: eligibility passes (single applicant allowed), budget fits, and the deadline is comfortable. But check 6 surfaces a 40% co-funding requirement the CFO has not approved, and check 4 shows implementation weighted heavier than the team expected. Ten minutes turned "obviously ours" into a REVIEW with two named blockers — resolved in one meeting instead of discovered at submission week.

Where GRANTIBASE helps

Call Evaluation produces all six checks as a structured report from the live call text — including the watchouts humans skim past — and adds a personalised GO / NO-GO verdict when your profile is saved. Browse open calls and assess as you go.

Opportunity assessment FAQ

What should a funding opportunity assessment cover?
Six points: hard eligibility (country, entity type, consortium), budget fit against your real project size, deadline feasibility, the evaluation criteria and their weights, overall difficulty and competition, and call-specific watchouts hidden in the conditions.
How long should assessing one call take?
About ten minutes with a structured checklist for a first verdict — enough to sort calls into pursue, park, or discard. Deep due diligence only makes sense for calls that survive that first pass.
What are typical watchouts hidden in EU call conditions?
Mandatory deliverables that require partners you do not have (clinical sites, pilot infrastructure), co-funding or financial-capacity checks, restrictive IP or security clauses, two-stage submissions that stretch timelines, and topic-specific annexes that quietly change eligibility.
