All TRL levels (1–9)
  1. TRL 1: Basic principles observed. Scientific research begins; principles are formulated.
  2. TRL 2: Technology concept formulated. Practical applications are invented; speculation begins.
  3. TRL 3: Experimental proof of concept. Active R&D starts; analytical studies validate concepts.
  4. TRL 4: Technology validated in lab. Components integrated and tested in a laboratory environment.
  5. TRL 5: Technology validated in relevant environment. Breadboard validation in a simulated or relevant setting.
  6. TRL 6: Technology demonstrated in relevant environment. Prototype system demonstrated in a relevant environment.
  7. TRL 7: System prototype demonstration in operational environment. Prototype near or at planned operational system.
  8. TRL 8: System complete and qualified. Technology proven to work in its final form under expected conditions.
  9. TRL 9: Actual system proven in operational environment. Successful mission operations / competitive manufacturing.
