This research explores the transition from gamete to zygote in fission yeast, focusing on gene expression regulation and mating blocks. By understanding these mechanisms, the project aims to shed light on developmental processes relevant to various organisms.
As two gametes fuse, the newly formed zygote immediately represses mating, to prevent polyploid formation, and triggers the developmental program that gives rise to a new individual.
My work showed that zygotes of fission yeast and higher eukaryotes bare striking similarities, and here I propose to use this powerful model system to explore the basic mechanisms of gamete-to-zygote transition.
