This project investigates how helminth infections influence the development and progression of colorectal cancer. By using a model of cancer, it examines the effects of live helminth exposure on immune responses and tumor growth, aiming to enhance understanding of potential therapeutic approaches.
The incidence of cancer is significantly lower in developing areas such as Africa, than in the Western world.
These developing regions have a high incidence of helminth infection, which can protect against immune-mediated diseases and are currently being successfully used within clinical trials as novel therapeutics to treat inflammatory bowel disease.
