This project aims to enhance the performance of wind turbines in extreme cold climates by developing an advanced ice detection system and a low-power localized heating solution. These innovations will enable more reliable and cost-effective wind energy generation in regions prone to ice formation, ultimately increasing…
Technical limitations constrain the use of wind turbines (WT) in extreme (cold) climates.
These arise in Northen (Scandinavia, Scotland) as well as high altitude (Switzerland, south Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Austria) regions in the EU.
The main challenge is ice formation on the WT blades which significantly reduces their performance and can ultimately cause shutdown.
Power losses related to icing of 14-20% in cold climates are common.
Ice formation causes significant issues with the safety…
