This project investigates the chemistry of volcanic plumes, focusing on halogens, ozone, and mercury. By developing a new atmospheric model and conducting field measurements, it aims to quantify the impacts of volcanic emissions on air quality and environmental health.
This project delivers a multi-faceted approach to understanding the halogen, ozone, and mercury chemistry of volcanic plumes in the troposphere.
Small eruptions and continuous degassing volcanoes release halogens that are converted into reactive forms (e.g.
BrO) in the plume and are known to have significant impacts such as the destruction of ozone and conversion of mercury into more toxic forms.
