This project focuses on modeling the biodegradation potential of groundwater ecosystems by integrating individual-based models with ecological data. It aims to enhance understanding of microbial interactions and their role in natural water purification processes, crucial for improving groundwater management.
All members of the groundwater biotic community, comprising microorganisms, protozoans, and metazoans, potentially contribute to the natural attenuation of organic matter inputs deriving e.g. from contaminations.
Since an increasing proportion of drinking water is won from groundwater, bioremediation is important for public health.
Sampling groundwater however is limited compared to other habitats.
