The VESSEL project focuses on understanding the impact of ship noise on baleen whales, which are crucial for marine ecosystems. By measuring noise levels and their effects on whale behavior and energy budgets, the project aims to inform management strategies for reducing underwater noise pollution.
Baleen whales are mega predators that shape the ecosystem structure and maintain healthy marine environments. A decrease in their populations can therefore have cascading trophic impacts detrimental to marine ecosystems they inhabit.
