This project focuses on developing a new method to control sand flies, the vectors of visceral and cutaneous leishmaniasis, by studying their sex pheromones. The goal is to reduce the transmission of these diseases through innovative and environmentally friendly strategies.
Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) & cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) are parasitic diseases transmitted to humans by the bite of infected insects (sand flies). VL is fatal if not treated and CL may cause facial disfigurement both are more likely to affect children under 15 years old in European as well as S.
Mediterranean countries.
