This research investigates the mechanisms of non-photochemical quenching in photosynthetic organisms to protect against oxidative stress. Using the model organism Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, the project aims to understand how light and nutrient conditions affect this protective response.
Life on Earth relies on photosynthesis that converts water and carbon dioxide into organic molecules using absorbed light by chlorophylls bound to light harvesting complexes (LHC).
During evolution, LHC have maximized the capability to capture light energy, allowing organisms to grow even in very low light environments.
