The U-CROSS project focuses on developing ultrasonic corrosion sensors to detect and monitor corrosion in aircraft structures. By combining different ultrasonic techniques, the project aims to provide real-time data on corrosion initiation and progression, enhancing maintenance and safety in the aerospace industry.
Corrosion is a dynamic process in which propagation rate remains difficult to predict and varies depending on the type of corrosion occurring (pitting, intergranular, exfoliation,filiform, corrosion-fatigue and SCC).
Currently, the presence of corrosion damages may be detected by means of NDT.
However, corrosion initiation and mechanism behind the defect cannot be distinguished by currently used methods.
