This project focuses on developing a digital twin of the ocean to enhance decision-making for ocean sustainability. It examines the socio-political implications of such digital models, addressing issues of data access, ownership, and the ethical use of ocean data.
In the light of time pressure, persisting data gaps, and challenges to the implementation of global sustainability goals for ocean protection, the European Commission is currently building a prototype digital twin of the ocean (DTO).
