This project investigates how primary tumors alter the immune system, leading to a state of immune suppression that increases the risk of metastatic cancer. By studying melanoma, it aims to identify the molecular changes in bone marrow cells and explore potential strategies to reverse these effects and prevent relapse.
Despite successful surgical removal of primary tumors, many cancer patients ultimately succumb to metastatic relapse, often years after apparent cure.
How tumors imprint long-lasting changes on the immune system that favor this deadly recurrence remains largely unknown.
