This project investigates the role of stem and progenitor cells in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. By understanding the cellular heterogeneity and the surrounding microenvironment, the aim is to develop targeted therapies that could reduce the need for invasive surgeries in patients.
Cancer develops from mutations in stem and progenitor cells.
Patients suffering from esophageal squamous cell carcinoma are commonly treated by a combination of chemotherapy and esophagectomy, a debilitating surgical procedure.
