This project examines the historical concept of corruption in South-East-Central Europe from 1750 to 1850, exploring how perceptions of graft and nepotism influenced political narratives. It aims to connect these ideas to broader themes of modernization and cultural change in the region.
Politicians, scholars, and popular writers between 1750 and 1850 routinely characterized South-East-Central Europe as a corrupt political space. A wide range of foreign observers portrayed graft, nepotism, and bribery as endemic.
Indigenous critics echoed many of these assessments.
