TRACES aims to bridge the gap between Inuit traditional knowledge and Western scientific approaches to wildlife management. The project will gather diverse data on hunting practices and resource use to foster better relationships between Indigenous communities and policymakers.
Like many Indigenous peoples around the world, Inuit of Foxe Basin, central Arctic Canada, view hunting and the food security it provides to be a collective cornerstone of their cultural identity.
However, much conflict exists between Inuit subsistence hunters and regulators over the population sizes of many animal species (e.g., caribou, walruses, and polar bears) and the continued sustainability of hunts;
