This research explores the historical and cultural dynamics surrounding the establishment of permanent theaters in ancient Rome. It analyzes the political struggles between the Roman Senate and influential figures, using archaeological evidence to understand the impact on urban development and theater architecture.
This study examines the cultural and political processes leading to the institution and resolution of the (unwritten) ban on the permanent theater, effective in Rome, from 154 BCE until the construction of Pompey’s Theater-Portico Complex (61-55 BCE).
Previously approached from the viewpoint provided through textual evidence, the crisis of the permanent theater has been interpreted as a power struggle between masses and the Roman elite.
