This project focuses on studying marine benthic ciliates to enhance understanding of their diversity and ecological roles. It employs both classical microscopy and modern molecular techniques to compare species from the UK and China, while also developing an interactive online identification guide for these organisms.
Ciliated protozoa (ciliates) are important in terms of their diversity, ecology, pathogenesis and as indicators of environmental quality.
Marine benthic ciliates, however, are rather poorly known due to a lack of modern treatments and taxonomic expertise.
The objectives of this project are: (1) to increase knowledge of local and global species diversity. A faunistic study of benthic ciliates from UK coastal waters will be carried out using classical microscopy and modern molecular methods.
