This project explores the ecological transformations in the Baltic region during the crusades, focusing on the impact of the Teutonic Order's castles on local environments. It aims to understand how these historical events influenced the exploitation of natural resources and shaped the region's ecological landscape.

They had a significant impact on the region characterised as a cultural frontier which came to be dominated by crusading institutions into the 16th century and are fundamental to understanding the development and consolidation of a European society, united under Christianity.
