This project investigates the genetic factors influencing susceptibility and resistance to Mycobacterium tuberculosis using zebrafish embryos. By studying gene expression during infection, the project aims to identify key host genes involved in the immune response to this deadly pathogen.
Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) is still the most deadly bacterial pathogen worldwide.
The World Health Organization estimates that one third of the world population is infected with tuberculosis (TB), mostly in a latent form, where mycobacteria can persist for many years inside macrophages that form specialized host structures called granulomas.
The burden of TB is further exacerbated by the widespread emergence of multi-drug resistant and extensively drug-resistant strains.
