This project aims to combat antibiotic resistance by developing inhibitors that target the MarA protein, which regulates the AcrAB efflux pump in bacteria. By preventing the expression of this pump, the project seeks to enhance the effectiveness of existing antibiotics against resistant strains.
Antibiotic resistance is a growing global crisis and current predictions suggest that by 2050 drug resistant bacteria will cause up to 10 million deaths a year globally.
Bacteria employ many mechanisms to become resistant to antibiotics.
