This study explores the effects of atorvastatin on oxidative stress and inflammatory pathways in patients with ischemic heart disease. It aims to assess atorvastatin's impact on vascular function and redox signaling in human tissues obtained during coronary bypass surgery.
Ischemic heart disease (IHD) is characterised by increased systemic oxidative stress status.
Free radicals activate redox sensitive pathways responsible for the production of inflammatory mediators with key role in IHD.
Statins have a beneficial role in coronary atherosclerosis, but their potential effect on key features in the pathophysiology of IHD is unclear.
In this context, statins may have a beneficial effect in IHD by modifying myocardial and vascular redox signalling.
