This research explores how syntactic complexity in languages changes due to social factors, particularly in contexts of second language acquisition. By analyzing historical texts, the project aims to identify which syntactic features are most affected by these changes.
The aim of this project is to develop and test a new theory of variation and change in syntactic complexity, building on Trudgill’s (2011) theory of sociolinguistic typology and on the general architectural assumptions of Minimalist syntax.
