This project aims to empower ordinary citizens to combat online hostility by encouraging pro-social bystander interventions. It develops and tests a guidance intervention that motivates users to actively respond to incivility and hate speech on social media platforms.
While user-generated content and functionalities that enable users to engage in discussions on social media hold significant democratic potential, online hostility, such as incivility, discrimination and hate speech diminishes the quality of such deliberation.
