The SORTED project aims to enhance carotenoid production in diatoms by repurposing cellular mechanisms for biosynthesis. It focuses on understanding the role of specific enzymes and relocating biosynthetic pathways to improve yield and efficiency in microalgae.
Carotenoids, prized for their antioxidant properties, are essential precursors for crucial human vitamins and, in plants and algae, they play roles in light absorption and photoprotection against excessive light-induced damage to photosynthesis.
