SOFT-PLANET investigates the development of plate tectonics on Earth by studying mantle convection and rheology. It aims to understand the physical processes that shape planetary evolution and compare Earth with other rocky planets like Venus and Mars.
How and when plate tectonics (PT) developed on Earth, and why the Earth is currently the only rocky planet of the solar system with PT, are two of the main enigmas of Earth and Planetary Sciences.
The evolution of a planet is conditioned by heat transfer in its most viscous envelope, the mantle.
