This project focuses on the role of small regulatory RNAs in plant defense mechanisms against pathogens. It aims to investigate how these molecules interact across species during host-pathogen interactions, enhancing our understanding of plant immunity.
Genomes of higher eukaryotes encode small regulatory RNAs that direct transcriptional and post-transcriptional gene silencing. Two major classes of small RNA occur in plants, microRNAs (miRNAs) and small interfering RNAs (siRNAs), with the major difference being their biogenesis pathways.
Most small RNAs are generated through a series of maturation steps and incorporated into RNA-induced silencing complexes (RISC), which invariably contains a member of the Argonaute (AGO) protein family.
