This project focuses on understanding the structure and function of cilia, which are crucial for various biological processes. It aims to develop a new imaging technique to study the ciliary tip, potentially revealing insights into ciliary disorders and therapeutic targets.
Cilia and flagella are evolutionary conserved organelles indispensable for vital processes in eukaryotic organisms, such as environment sensing, cell motility, signaling and development.
Broad spectrum of ciliary functions, together with omnipresence of the cilium throughout human body, explains the range of symptoms associated with congenital ciliary disorders called ciliopathies.
On the other hand, cilia are essential for survival of parasites, such as trypanosomatids, in the host.
