This project examines the political choices surrounding structural adjustment policies from the 1970s to the 1980s, challenging the narrative of a natural neoliberal takeover. It investigates the contestation of these policies across various global contexts and actors.
The history of the late 20th century international political economy – from the 1973 oil crisis to the fall of the Iron Curtain in 1989 – is often told as a succession of shocks.
