This project investigates how genetic variation is maintained in animal populations despite sexual selection favoring elaborate traits. By studying wild great tits, it explores the roles of mate preferences, mutual choice, and non-genetic parental effects using advanced genetic analysis and experimental methods.
Across the animal kingdom, striking displays and ornaments are produced by sexual selection.
Current thinking is that females choose the most elaborate males because they display genetic benefits to offspring.
