This project focuses on identifying fertility genes in malaria parasites to disrupt their transmission to mosquitoes. By employing a novel genetic system, it aims to map the roles of various genes in the parasite's life cycle, which could lead to new drug and vaccine candidates.
Sexual development in malaria parasites is critical for disease transmission between infected individuals, and is therefore a major target for the malaria elimination agenda.
However, there are currently no effective drugs or vaccines that block parasite transmission to mosquitoes, and we currently do not understand the molecular mechanisms involved.
