The SETRU-2.0 project aims to comprehensively study Etruscan stone sarcophagi, including both decorated and undecorated examples. It seeks to create a complete inventory and methodological guide, employing advanced analysis techniques to enhance understanding of Etruscan funerary art.
Stone sarcophagi are one of the most important witnesses of Etruscan funerary art and craftmanship.
Although a few examples areattested between the 8th and the 5th centuries BC (Orientalist, Archaic and Classical periods), most of the production dates from the4th-2nd centuries BC (Hellenistic period) and is mainly distributed in the necropolises of the southern Etruria (northern Lazio), andmore specifically in the territory of the city of Tarquinia.
