SCARBO focuses on developing a new system for monitoring greenhouse gas emissions using a constellation of small satellites and advanced spectrometer technology. The project aims to provide accurate and frequent measurements of carbon dioxide and methane emissions globally.
In October 2015, a group of scientific and technical experts released a report to help the Commission implement a strategy “Towards a European operational observing system to monitor fossil CO2 emissions” [Ciais et al.].
Along the lines of the recommendations of this report, the SCARBO project is tackling the challenge of anthropogenic GHG monitoring by investigating a new concept based on innovative technologies.
