The project investigates RNA modifications, known as epitranscriptomics, and their influence on gene expression and disease mechanisms. By training researchers in this emerging field, the project aims to enhance understanding of RNA's role in health and disease, paving the way for new therapeutic approaches.
Epitranscriptomics is the study of RNA modifications and their role in the regulation of gene expression.
As happened for DNA, extensive covalent modification of RNA was found already in the 70s.
Nevertheless, a spectacular expansion of epitranscriptomics occurred mostly in the past seven years, when an extensive layer of base decorations was discovered in mRNAs and shown to undergo cell modulation.
