This project investigates the mutation rates of RNA viruses, focusing on poliovirus, to understand how genetic diversity affects virus behavior and vaccine development. New infection models will be created to study these dynamics and utilize advanced sequencing technologies for insights into virus populations.
RNA viruses have the highest mutation frequencies in nature, which are in large part attributed to the low fidelity of their viral RNA-dependent RNA polymerases (RdRp).
