The MIONIÑO project aims to investigate the existence of a permanent El Niño-like state during the late Miocene using geochemical records and modeling. This research will enhance understanding of past climate conditions and their implications for future climate scenarios.
A key dispute in palaeoclimate research is whether or not a permanent El Niño-like state, with warm waters spreading across the equatorial Pacific, existed during the late Miocene.
