This project investigates how advocacy for pro-democracy content influences content moderation rules on digital platforms like Facebook and Twitter. It aims to develop a model based on evidence from Asian pro-democracy movements and produce resources to support activists and inform social media companies.
Digital platforms, such as Facebook and Twitter, have long touted themselves as defenders of freedom of expression, yet their content moderation rules have faced global criticism, amongst others for failing to tackle authoritarian repression of dissident voices.
