The DNA-SPADE project aims to develop a portable diagnostic device for detecting antibodies in whole blood, targeting mother-to-child transmission of HIV and Syphilis. It combines advanced laboratory techniques with user-friendly design to improve early diagnosis and treatment.
Mother-to-child transmission of HIV and Syphilis causes approximately 305,000 fetal and neonatal deaths every year and leaves 215,000 infants at increased risk of dying from prematurity, low-birth-weight or congenital disease.
An accurate diagnosis of diagnostic-antibodies and a simple treatment during the first weeks of pregnancy could stop all those deaths.
