This project aims to build the first millimeter wave circular dichroism spectrometer to study the structure of bio-macromolecules. By analyzing the differential absorption of circularly polarized light, it seeks to provide insights into the chiral properties of biological materials.
By one of very important key for understanding biological processes is knowledge of structure of bio-macromolecules.
These molecules have optical activity asymmetry which is connected with macromolecule structure and they absorb across the millimeter wave part of the spectrum due to collective vibrational modes.
It is supposed that there will also be significant circular dichroism - differential absorption of left- and right-handed circularly polarized light.
