This project investigates the mechanisms by which the bacterium Streptococcus pneumoniae develops antibiotic resistance. By studying how certain antibiotics induce a state that allows the bacteria to take up DNA, the project aims to uncover new strategies to combat bacterial infections and resistance.
Despite the introduction of several vaccines, the human pathogen Streptococcus pneumoniae remains one of the leading bacterial causes of mortality worldwide, killing 1 million of children each year.
