This project investigates the role of a unique actin-related protein complex in the development of malaria-causing parasites during their mosquito stage. By understanding its function and regulation, the research aims to identify new targets for antimalarial strategies.
The malaria-causing Plasmodium parasites often use highly divergent proteins to regulate fundamental biological processes, such as sexual replication in the mosquito.
Therefore, the molecular and cellular biology underlying parasite development is often little understood, especially during the mosquito stages, a major bottleneck in the Plasmodium life cycle.
