This project investigates the link between enterovirus infections and type 1 diabetes, focusing on how these viruses contribute to inflammation and damage in insulin-producing cells. It aims to develop new therapeutic strategies and vaccines by leveraging unique biobanks and a collaborative research approach.
Type 1 diabetes is caused by an inflammatory process which damage insulin-producing beta-cells in the pancreas.
It is one of the most common chronic diseases and its incidence is rapidly increasing.
Due to its complications it causes a significant medical and economic burden to European society. A causal association between enterovirus and type 1 diabetes has become more and more likely.
