Streptococcus pneumoniae (the pneumococcus) is a bacterial species generally commensal to humans, but which occasionally causes infections responsible for the death of 800, 000 infants each year worldwide.
Multiple genotypes exhibiting resistance to antibiotics have emerged in past years.
