This project examines the historical legal restrictions on women's economic rights in Europe from the 12th century onward. It aims to analyze the impact of these laws on female agency and develop a digital atlas to visualize changes in property rights over time.
From the mid-12th century, all over Europe, laws started to be enacted that hindered women from acquiring and managing wealth, triggering a long process that on the threshold of early modernity led to a dramatic reduction in their economic opportunities.
