This project explores collective psychological ownership, the shared sense of belonging to objects or territories among groups. It aims to understand how this phenomenon influences intergroup relations and social cohesion, particularly in contexts of ethnic conflict and immigration.
Even in the absence of legal ownership, people tend to experience objects, places, and ideas as belonging to them (‘mine’).
This state of mind is called psychological ownership.
Research has shown that experiences of ownership are very important for individuals, but can also lead to interpersonal conflicts.
