OMHI explores the complexities of urban development in 20th-century India by focusing on lesser-known contributors to architecture in Pune. It employs participatory methods to gather oral histories and photographs, aiming to enrich the understanding of local building practices and their historical context.
OMHI aims to complicate hegemonic and linear understandings of ‘modernisation’ in India’s 20th-century urban and architectural historiography by tapping into the experience of lesser studied and often marginalized actors who built India’s modern cities.
Investigations of urban transformation as it occurred on the ground, rather than on the drawing table, will provide new insights into how building practice was (or was not) shaped by the interplay between local building traditions and aspirations…
