This project explores the adaptability of the adult mammalian brain by investigating neural stem cells in two specific regions. It aims to understand how these stem cells coordinate their behavior in response to physiological states and how this system evolved compared to other species, like zebrafish.
The adult mammalian brain exhibits a remarkable capacity of adaptation, which has long been thought to result from synaptic remodeling of neurons born during development.
Importantly, the discovery that new neurons can be generated in the adult by neural stem cells (NSCs) revolutionized our understanding of brain plasticity.
In the adult mouse brain, NSCs reside in two specialized niches: the dentate gyrus (DG), and the ventricular-subventricular zone (V-SVZ) lining the lateral ventricles.
