This research investigates the role of specific resistance genes in plants that cause hybrid necrosis, a phenomenon affecting plant growth and immunity. By using genome editing, it aims to understand the mechanisms behind this trade-off and its implications for plant health.
Resistance (R) loci with nucleotide binding/leucine rich repeat (NB-LRR or NLR) domains have been identified as the major causal genes for hybrid necrosis, which presents an extreme example of the trade-off between plant growth and the activation of immune system.
