This project aims to enhance the efficiency of nitrate use in crop plants by investigating the molecular mechanisms behind nitrate uptake and utilization. By identifying key genes and regulatory circuits, the research seeks to develop crop varieties that require less nitrate fertilizer.
The high yield of crop plants currently supports the global population with sufficient food, but this is achieved at substantial environmental cost.
One of the most significant of these costs involves the use of nitrate fertilizers, which pollute groundwater supplies and promotes the formation of a potent greenhouse gas.
